Unbottle Privacy Policy

1. The short version

Unbottle has no accounts, no sign-in and no server of its own. Everything you record about your drinking stays on your phone.

Two third-party services do receive limited data: an analytics service that measures how the app is used, and a payments service that runs the subscription. Both are described below in full.

2. What stays on your device

All of the following is written to storage on your phone and is never sent to us:

  • Your quit date or weekly drink budget, and the plan built from it
  • Daily check-ins, logged drinks, cravings and their triggers
  • Your journal entries
  • Savings goals, awards and streaks
  • Your onboarding answers, including your first name, age range, gender, what you drink, how much, and what it costs

We have no way to read any of it. There is no cloud copy and no backup on our side. Deleting the app deletes this data.

On iPhone, a subset of it (your quit date, drink type, currency, price and weekly amount) is shared with the Unbottle home-screen widget through a private app group on your own device. That stays on the phone too.

3. Analytics, and what we are not going to pretend about it

Unbottle uses PostHog to understand how the app is used — which screens people reach, where they get stuck, and where it breaks. Data is sent to PostHog's EU servers (eu.i.posthog.com).

Two things you should know plainly:

  • Analytics is on by default and the current version has no switch to turn it off. We would rather say that than describe a setting that does not exist.
  • Session replay is enabled. This records how you move through the app — taps, screens and navigation — so we can see where the app is confusing. It is a reconstruction of your interaction with the interface, not a video of your screen or your camera.

Analytics events are keyed to a random identifier generated on your device, not to your name or email. We do not send your journal entries, your check-in notes, or your craving notes to PostHog.

If you would rather not be measured at all, the honest answer today is not to use the app. We are working on an opt-out and this policy will be updated when it ships.

4. Subscriptions

Unbottle uses Superwall to show the subscription screens and manage entitlements. Superwall receives a device identifier, your subscription status, and a small amount of information used to personalise the offer:

  • The first name you entered during onboarding
  • Your currency, and the estimated monthly and yearly amount you spend on alcohol
  • Which drink you told us you mostly have

Payment itself is handled entirely by Apple. We never see your card details.

5. Notifications

Reminders, milestone alerts and check-in nudges are scheduled locally by your phone. There is no push server, so no notification content ever leaves your device. You can turn notifications off in the app or in iOS Settings.

6. Health information

What you record in Unbottle — how much you drink, cravings, check-ins — is sensitive. That is exactly why it stays on the device. Unbottle does not read from or write to Apple Health, and it does not share anything you log with any third party.

7. Your rights

Because your records never reach us, most data requests are things you can carry out yourself, immediately:

  • Erasure — delete the app, or use Settings to reset your data
  • Access and portability — your data is on your device; we hold no copy to send you
  • Objection — see section 3 for the current state of analytics

If you are in the EU or EEA and want to exercise a right against the analytics or subscription data described above, email us and we will pass the request to the relevant provider.

8. Third-party services

  • PostHog — analytics and session replay (EU region)
  • Superwall — subscription paywalls and entitlements
  • Apple — app distribution and payment
  • Expo — the framework the app is built with

9. Children

Unbottle is about alcohol and is not intended for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

10. Changes

If this policy changes, the effective date below changes with it. Material changes will be noted in the app.
